General Information

What are CoolWorks™? Tell me about their history.

CoolWorks™ work pants were designed, tested and developed by steelworkers at a unionized stamping facility in Dundas, Ontario, Canada. Prohibited from wearing shorts at work for safety reasons, workers needed relief from plant temperatures that often reached +40° Celsius (+104° Fahrenheit) in the summer months. Many workers would often do anything to beat the heat and humidity (e.g. rolling up or un-snapping their pant legs thereby exposing their bare legs to potential injury) and they understandably often found it necessary to take several personal breaks per day to re-hydrate in an effort to avoid heat prostration. Plant management was sympathetic to the plight of the workers, but because of workplace insurance issues and the prohibitive costs of air conditioning, their hands were tied.

CoolWorks™ work pants solve these problems by incorporating non-detachable lower leg portions that are predominantly constructed from extremely durable open textured meshes that permit the free circulation of air around the worker’s legs. Our work pants also include separate, detachable, self storing leg covers that permit additional protection and/or all-season application. This simple yet unique Patended design allows CoolWorks™ to offer employees the comfort of shorts while at the same time ensuring the abrasion protection and professional appearance of standard issue work pants. This in turn is proven to afford employers increased productivity, decreased absenteeism and improved workplace morale.

Who are your main customers/end users?

Workers in many different industries are enjoying the advantages that CoolWorks™ work pants have to offer. They are currently being used by manufacturing and assembly workers, steelworkers, utility workers, city and highway workers, construction workers, food industry and bakery workers, forestry workers, nuclear workers and petrochemical workers to name a few.

Also, our durable CoolWorks™ work pants have become very popular with many people for various recreational activities such as golfing, fishing, and hunting and our high-visibility editions are perfect for rollerblading or skateboarding on busy city streets.

Why should I choose CoolWorks™ work pants over my regular work pants?

CoolWorks™ outperform regular work pants in all conditions. In cooler weather, or when extra protection on the job is required, the additional layer of mesh underneath the detachable covers provides extra insulation and protection from workplace hazards. In hot, humid conditions, simply remove the leg shells and our work pants are much cooler and more comfortable than anything else on the market.

(Back to Index)

Why should I choose CoolWorks™ work pants over my regular work shorts?

Simply put, CoolWorks™ work pants combine the protection of pants with the comfort of shorts. It doesn’t make sense to expose your legs to the unnecessary risks associated with wearing shorts.

As for the contractors out there, you will have peace of mind knowing that you and your crew will always be working in compliance with jobsite rules and regulations. And CoolWorks™ will give your company a much more professional appearance on any job.

My workplace is air conditioned/climate controlled. Why do I need your CoolWorks™ in my facility?

Many employers go to great lengths and considerable expense to air condition their workplaces solely for their employees comfort because they know that a happy, comfortable workforce is a much more productive workforce.

Some larger production facilities can easily surpass 1 million square feet in floor space. With an average ceiling height of 30 feet, one can begin to imagine the costs associated with climate controlling a plant containing 30,000,000 (That’s 30 Million!) cubic feet of air.

Outfitting your workforce in CoolWorks™ work pants quickly pays for itself as it provides a considerable annual cost savings to companies by simply allowing them the flexibility to TURN THE THERMOSTAT UP A FEW DEGREES in warmer weather without decreasing employee comfort levels.

(Back to Index)

How can a ‘ventilated’ work pant have ‘all-season’ applications?

Every pair of our standard all-season CoolWorks™ work pants comes with detachable leg covers to be used over top of the mesh legs. This allows them to be used as either conventional solid fabric pants or optionally, with the covers removed, as ventilated work pants.

CoolWorks™ Work Pant Materials and Construction

Where are CoolWorks™ manufactured?

CoolWorks™ are manufactured in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

(Back to Index)

Are the lower mesh leg portions detachable? Why not?

No. When we designed our CoolWorks™ work pants we wanted to make sure that they always remained exactly that; a pair of pants. Many employers had expressed concerns that if their employees could remove the lower mesh portions of our pants, thereby converting them into standard shorts, it would defeat the intended purpose of maintaining the desired abrasion protection. Because of the potential enforcement issues for employers, the bottom mesh portions of our pants are NOT removable and therefore CoolWorks™ ALWAYS remain in the configuration of a regular pair of pants.

Health and Safety Answers

Are CoolWorks™ CSA approved?

There are currently no CSA guidelines pertaining to standard, non-reflective equipped work pants. There are however some specific rules and regulations regarding pants designed for specific end users e.g. firefighters, nighttime workers and chainsaw operators. Such regulations usually pertain to the construction methods and materials used in the making of these garments and they generally fall more into the category of personal protective equipment. (PPE) Any current or future CoolWorks™ work pants that fall into these categories will be made to the CSA or to the other applicable governing body’s specifications.

(Back to Index)

Do your work pants with reflective leg bands meet CSA specifications?

Yes. Our work pants are equipped with the required 2 inch wide retroreflective leg bands and they are positioned well above the required minimum of 2 inches from the bottom of the garment. This allows them to be worn in combination with CSA approved safety vests (or t-shirts) and armbands, or in combination with approved jackets, thereby fulfilling Class 3 garment guidelines pertaining to nighttime roadside workers in traffic conditions where speeds exceed 80Km/H.

(Back to Index)

Do your high-visibility work pants meet current and future chromaticity (brightness) standards?

Yes. And our exclusive fabrics retain their brightness much longer then the standard cotton/polyester blends that are predominantly in use today.

(Back to Index)

Why do you stock two different high-visibility fabrics? Should I choose the Lime/Yellow or the Blaze Orange?

Although both colours meet today’s guidelines, current international and domestic standards seem to be shifting away from the Blaze Orange and adopting the Hi-Visibility Lime/Yellow in its place. This is generally attributed to two factors. Firstly, it is estimated that up to ten percent of the population suffers from colour blindness. Secondly, newer cars are increasingly coming with sodium headlights as standard equipment. In both cases, tests have shown that the Lime/Yellow colour provides for superior contrast and visibility over the Blaze Orange.

(Back to Index)

Will my employer allow me to wear CoolWorks™ on the job?

Most employers will generally allow you to wear your CoolWorks™ ‘as is’ (without leg covers) under normal working conditions. Our amazingly durable meshes have been tested and approved in a variety of demanding industrial environments.

However, because the mesh is a substantially open textured and porous material, caution should of course be taken in certain situations where this could pose a problem e.g. welding, caustics, acids, etc. We recommend that you keep your leg covers handy at all times so that they are always available for re-installation when conditions merit extra protection. When the leg covers are on, your CoolWorks™ will outperform all other standard work pants.

(Back to Index)

How strong is the mesh material as compared to regular woven fabrics? Are they as safe as my regular work pants?

The polyester athletic mesh is extremely durable and in most cases will outlast the rest of the garment which is, incidentally, a regular woven fabric. We like to answer this question with a question of our own? Ever seen a torn hockey jersey?

(Back to Index)

Are CoolWorks™ suitable on the job when welding or grinding?

The answer is Always, Never and Sometimes. Always, because you can always re-attach the leg covers. Never, because when the covers are off, there is always the possibility a spark may penetrate the mesh. Sometimes, because many of our customers do weld in them as is (without leg covers) using nothing but a shop coat without any problems. The bottom line is, you know your job and your working conditions better than we, and ultimately the decision is yours. Use your head and be safe…..please “air on the side of caution.”

Keep an eye on our website for our soon to be coming flame-resistant models of CoolWorks™ work pants.

(Back to Index)

Are CoolWorks™ available in flame-resistant materials?

We are currently developing a flame-resistant version of our work pant and are hoping to have it rated (Hydro and chemical workers rejoice!) and available for spring 2006.

(Back to Index)

Are CoolWorks™ suitable for electrical (e.g. Hydro) and other utilities workers?

All early indications suggest that our flame-resistant pants that are currently in development will meet the requirements of many electrical and other utilities workers. Keep watching our website for details and test results.
